Actually come to think of it, she pretty much proves the social construct nature of whiteness.
She kind of reminds me of Lady Gaga, and also, I think she would fit in in most French-speaking communities in Canada... Lady Gaga is of Italian descent, the ancestry of most French-Canadians is from the Western part of France near the border with Spain, and most white Latinx trace their ancestry to Spain... we are looking at a similar gene pool for these groups, and I would assume that Kali Uchis was white until I learned she was Latina.. meaning I am still brainwashed into this mentality.
This is why I say, that despite the studies now that say the US will become majority minority in 2040 are not true. It is assuming that America will continue to consider Latinx non-white at that time, and I don't think they will. The fluid nature of whiteness means I think the US will continue to have a white majority.
In the late 1800s, there was a similar moral panic in the US about becoming majority non-white in the face of immigration or Irish, Italians, and Eastern Europeans, which lead to nativist populism like the "Know-Nothings" which eventually lead to the split of the Whig Party into the Know-Nothings and the Republican Party (quite similar to how the modern GOP is showing cracks between the establishment Republicans and the Trump/Bannon wing). What actually happened was that those groups ended up being absorbed into white America.
And if I am not mistaken, Latinx were considered white at one time, the distinction was created by politicians (Richard Nixon I think?) who lumped them into a new category, since cultural difference from other white Americans meant that they had to use a different strategy to appeal to them as voters.
