This happened in my city 100 years ago today. Until the first atomic bomb, it was the biggest explosion on earth (the Hiroshima bomb was described as "seven Halifax Explosions" in the media), and until 9/11, it was the worst man-made disaster in North America
People in my city thought the Germans did it and thought Canada was getting invaded.
I live in the Hydrostone area of the city too, they were originally houses for the survivors.
This is also how the United Church was founded. The Protestant population of Halifax was hit particularly hard in terms of % of their population killed (other religions fared much better). So many were killed that there was no point having churches for the different denominations (Methodist, Presbyterian, Evangelical), so they joined together in one church and formed a new religion. Uniteds are now probably a good 25%-30% of the Canadian population and it's the second most practiced religion in Canada after Roman Catholicism... they are also the most progressive and peaceful of religious groups, being strongly anti-war, do a lot of charity work, and have always been the most LGBT friendly religion, being the only religious body in Canada that uniformly performs gay marriage... most Canadian Evangelicals today are right-wingers originally from the United Church who defected over their support for gay marriage and BDS lol
I couldn't imagine being on of the crew of that munitions ship, who were watching the ship float towards a city (one of Canada's "major cities" at that) and screaming hoping people would hear them and get out of there, from the other side of the harbour.
