I find those guys way less sexist. At least here in Canada, they are.
There are a few things a guy could be into that come across as red flags to me:
- Video games (particularly World of Warcraft)
- Rick and Morty
- Anime
- Comic books
Which sucks because I used to be into video games and comics.
Video games seem to be present in all walks of life these days. Women more often choose some, men others, but other than that I've not seen any correlations.
Anime? Now that is curious. I'm not a big anime fan, but a close friend is. Anime in both US and in Germany seems to be disproportionally full of homosexual, nonbinary and trans people... also people with mental issues, depression and the perpetually unemployed. Its not all flowers and rainbows.
Still, it is the one group that seems the most "nonstraight" of all pop culture fans. Certainly strikes me as the least conservative of these sort of "nerdy" groups.
Popculture speaking, some of the most conservative and patriarchal ones are strangely enough Disney fans (hell, never seen so many immature adult brainwashed women in a single popculture demographic). Robert Jordan loves Disney btw. I honestly think that the half-baked attempts at social justice have done more harm than good in Disney stories. Oh and Disney princesses remain a scourge in the collective subconscious of immense numbers of women. Horrible and repugnant.
"Game of Thrones" and "Harry Potter" are similar in the sense that you get both right wingers and leftwingers there, but for some reason its mostly pretty horrible people from both camps. I steer clear of these two.
Tolkien has people from both sides, though more christian types. But it is easily one of the least violent and most intelligent fandoms out there. I guess it is the language, Tolkien's prose is so old-style and difficult, that I guess most dimwits are just replelled by language alone.
I know in some circles its described as some sort of racist circlejerk, but as a mulatta I've never experienced it (I'm sure I'd sooner find Tolkien fans that would attack my sexuality or atheism then skin color).
Ever since I’ve been exposed to the political side of media, I’ve always found it bizarre how many of these conservatives (especially far right type) are into anime. You would think they would avoid that medium because of its bizarre flamboyant nature. Where I grew up in the Midwest USA (which is a relatively conservative and predominantly white area) anime was hardly to be seen or heard other than if you stumble upon it in tv. Most of the people who were into anime (which was an extreme minority usually consisting of very socially isolated people) were harassed for it, because it looked “sissy” to them.
When I moved to the DMV, I found that anime was far more popular here, but over here it seems that anime has a more minority fan base and it’s become a stereotype that white people “aren’t into anime”. There was even a time when a co worker of mine (who was black) was asking what type of anime I watched (assuming I was into anime), and a white co worker stopped by to ask what were those names we were discussing, I tried to tell him but then the black co worker butted in and told me “he’s white, he wouldn’t understand”.
When it comes to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, I find that the hardcore fanbase of those are usually these hipster types that you find downtown (usually hanging around the library). Same with Game of Thrones
Overall, I find that conservatives in both areas usually don’t have a knack for fantasy or fiction in general. Most usually only follow sports, but when they do look for something to follow it’s usually superheroes or comics.
