Across all 40 countries in the study, each population gets a lot wrong. We are often most incorrect on factors that are widely discussed in the media, such as the proportion of our population that are Muslims and wealth inequality. We know from previous studies that this is partly because we over-estimate what we worry about.
There are multiple reasons for these errors – from our struggle with simple maths and proportions, to media coverage of issues, to social psychology explanations of our mental shortcuts or biases. It is also clear from our 'Index of Ignorance' that the countries who tend to do worst have relatively low internet penetrations: given this is an online survey, this will reflect the fact that this more middle-class and connected population think the rest of their countries are more like them than they really are
People tend to overestimate the population of people they are biased against.
30 out of every 100 people are Muslim??? They think that in France???
They have Canada and the US in that study but not on the graphic. Both countries said 15% when Canada is 3% Muslim and the US 1%.
I dunno. In my particular part of Canada, I underestimated the Muslim population. A guy I work with (who is an American Trumpfugee) moved here because there are a lot of Muslims. 30% of the population, apparently. I remember when he told me that I was like "there are?"
I dunno, that seems pretty high to me. Unless he is counting people who's ancestors may have been Muslim but they are not religious at all, but even it sounds high.
I believe one of the reasons is that often immigrants live in certain areas, so it may create the impression that there are more visible immigrants than there are. Also, people probably have the idea that pretty much all people, who look non-European, are immigrants and Muslims, even people from the Balkan. It is a religion, not an ethnic grouping.
Ps. we don't have any accurate statistics about people's religion or ethnicity, so the number for my country must be an estimate.
Here's an article about this, in Danish (it's not a "fringe" source, it's a serious article):

soul49: I can definitely see this forum is dead. Do people still chat in other areas? I've been very busy over the past year with university work and other stuff, but would be cool to catch up with folks on occasion. Just know I'm still alive lol.
