I see the "Poland becoming a dictatorship" articles and reports everywhere in so called 'Western mainstream media' be it rightist, libertarian, centrist or leftist media. Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, Washington Post even Daily Fail have reported about this.
I'm too clueless about Polish politics so i'm careful to comment anything. It's good to get other perspectives.
But I lived here for years and the democratic process is the same, the freedom of speech is the same. You can go to opposition media like TVN or wyborcza.pl and you will find loads of articles how the government sucks, how everything is horrible and falling apart including democracy.
But the fact that people can write all this enormous criticism of the government here is the best proof that democracy and freedom of speech are doing fine. Our media can be as crazy and partisan as the US meedia, but they are also as free to be crazy and partisan as they like.
None of this would be possible in say Russia. The sheer amount of anti-goverment and pro-establishment media is the best proof that freedom of speech is doign great here. Same for free elections. You can start any demonstration you want here, crazy or not and NOBODY will stop you. Unless maybe someone with opposing views starts a counter-demonstation. Poles love their demonstrations you know
This is one part I am 100% certain of and I do not think I'm biased at all. This recent foreign media offensive against Poland is simply false. Poland is exactly the same country it was 2 years ago.
PiS was in power before btw in the mid 2000s. None of this is new.
