LOL I had to laugh at Fox News attacking this as "radical". It's yet another difference between Canada and the United States, where this would pass as a reasonable establishment/centrist platform here (hell, even many right-wingers would agree with most of it) lol
I agree with all except for the "abolish ICE" part. While I do understand why Democrats are starting to lean towards that position, and indeed sympathize considering what is going on, I would say ICE needs to be reformed, not abolished, since from my experience working for Canada's equivalent, you do need it... in my time there, they did apprehend some bad dudes, and by "bad dudes" I am talking Rwandan genocide perpetrators, Khmer Rouge members, and Nazis... like 90 year old real Nazis, not alt-right cosplayers. That's not even getting into the amount of contraband and bad food caught at the border. Asylum seekers are the least of their worries, since they are normal people, not like some freakshows you see at the border, and they pose a low national security risk. Side note: there is no such thing as "no national security risk" at the Canadian border. If you're "no national security risk", you probably need to see a doctor, because your heart ain't beating lol.
Then there is the amount of missing persons and human trafficking (especially children) cases that ICE, CBSA, and OPIS (Mexican equivalent) jointly assist with every year (all three agencies usually get notified of any amber alerts). It is, by far, the most disturbing part of such a job.
Not saying CBSA is perfect, it has a bad reputation internationally... it needs to be reformed as well.
Funny you say this, even many Democrats are claiming these are "Radical Leftist beliefs".
CNN and some of MSNBC was airing this platform earlier, trying to downplay them as "vocal minority" of the Democrat party.
I'm a little mixed, I won't lie that the "Abolish ICE" slogan tugs at my lizard brain strings, but realistically there needs to be a plan in order to fix the process, cause as you mentioned, ICE has done a decent job when they really did go after the "real bad guys".
Lol crazy. I wonder what they would think of what Canadians consider “radical leftist”? Lol. Because when I think of radical leftists, I think of people who would make the most left-leaning members on here look like fascists in comparison. But, Canada’s politics skews left anyway, I took the tests in iSideWith which plots you on the political spectrum in different countries, and while I came out hardcore centrist, like dead in the middle of the graph, in Canada, I was far-left, further left than even Bernie, in the US. I kind of miss the days when Canada had effectively no right wing, though, and our Conservative Party was more a High Tory party (I actually find it funny that ABF people praise High Toryism, because High Tories would be much harder on them than liberals or socialists are... our absurd level of political correctness and heavy penalties for hate speech come from those traditions more than any tradition of the left).
And like I said, I can understand why Americans are attracted to the “abolish ICE” message, because of what is going on. I don’t know how people who work for ICE can do it. I have heard stories of people who do feel bad but are afraid to say anything or quit because they will lose their benefits and pensions. I actually donated money to a couple of organizations one to help reunite parents with their kids but also one to assist ICE agents who get in trouble for speaking out (some are, it has been them who leaked footage to the media... but man, they have to suck it up and stay in there so they can still leak to the media, that must suck, but they are doing the right thing, I guess).
Well, CBSA, ICE, and OPIS work together on human trafficking related operations all the time. Lol I can tell you CBSA people don’t like ICE too much, they say they are dumb. Ironically, there was a serial killer in my city a few years ago, he fled to Mexico and was caught by Mexican authorities... he made it all the way through the US, drove from Canada, all the way through the US, to Mexico, and ICE didn’t catch him, OPIS did.
