Yes the Romas had always suffered racism and discrimination. When they first appeared in Europe they were thought to be Muslim invaders. The Moors for example had trampled from Iberia into Southern France, and Southern Italy and were relatively darker than most Europeans. At the time the Roma came into Europe, the Turks had already came into the East of Europe, although not much darker than Europeans, the Roma with their oriental clothing, and dark skin were thought to be Muslims of some kind, but actually were Hindu and they seemed to venerate and worship the Kali, the Black Goddess, once they adopted Christianity, she became the black virgin to the Romas. Also the term Gypsy comes from the thought they were Egyptian, and hence the name stuck. The Romas suffered programs, forced assimilation, and even out right genocides. Hence their travel. You also have some Romas who have become very White like the Romanichals.
Also it's politically correct to be racist against them. The hate against them is quite real in Europe and especially the east, not so much in Canada, America or even the Mideast where they present like Turkey.

One thing which truly pisses me off is that it has become acceptable to use the ethnic designation "Roma" when warning against criminal tricksters and hustlers, even though many of them are just regular Balkan people. It is only in the last couple of years they have started to use the label Roma as synonymous with criminal gangs.
