I alluded to this in the Black Panther thread.
The first supersonic aircraft capable of carrying missiles, hence conducting bombing campaigns, was developed by the Canadian military (while the Americans did made supersonic jets first, they were smaller and incapable of holding weapons). Here is a video of its first flight.
The Prime Minister at the time was actually horrified, and scrapped the program, because he felt this technology in the hands of the wrong people would cause misery and death (and I guess he was right, since other nations did create these jets, and they cause misery and death). I kind of compared T'Chaka and T'Challa's it to ethical concerns about exporting Wakandan knowledge and technology to the rest of the world in the Black Panther comic books, since the Canadian PM at the time (John Diefenbaker) had the same concerns. Well, we kind of know how that turned out in the real world... other countries just went and did it and air strikes kill people all over the world, and now Canada in order to be able to keep up with other countries has to buy American-made Boeing fighter jets.
Still, I can imagine the researchers upon hearing that, they worked their asses off for years developing this aircraft and then the government was like "OK, destroy it!"
"What really?"
"Yup... everybody get a sledge hammer"
Yeah, and this was a time when people on the political right in North America had consciences (Diefenbaker was right-wing as f), they were just marked by their extremely pessimistic view of human nature, and hence were against technological advancement because they felt that developing more advanced technology would lead to more dangerous weapons, that would just make the world a more dangerous place as people would not hesitate in using them against other people for no good reason. I think Diefenbaker was a lot like what many Americans thought they were getting in Trump, because he said "America first" and said he was against American military intervention around the world (though minus the racism, Diefenbaker was staunchly anti-racism and actually made Canada a less racist place, ending racial segregation and voter restrictions... and the only foreign intervention he did was challenging and placing sanctions on apartheid South Africa).
