Like, I seriously want to know...
So this happened in my city last night, a singer, who describes herself as an "outspoken queer indigenous Afro-Latina" (I know, when people start off by listing their identities, it's starting to become a red flag for me.. and so is the word "queer" TBH) was performing, and she asked all the white people to move to the back, and all the people of colour to move to the front, and not to talk to eachother... basically, dividing the crowd by race.
This caused a lot of controversy, and the singer in reaction to said controversy is saying the organizers showed "overt racism" towards her.
Now, I was not there, so maybe there was some real racism. But the whole dividing the crowd thing sounds weird. I also have doubts that a racist person would pay $55 (that's how much tickets were) to go to one of her shows, especially knowing who she is and the subject matter of her lyrics.
This is also happening at a time where there is a lot of racial tension in my city. Like, it hasn't been this bad as long as I have been alive at least. It started with the Proud Boys incident in July and some alt-right stuff at bars, there was a Muslim student getting threats from right-wingers because she criticized white fragility on her own personal Facebook page and got reprimanded by a university for it (so much for the left stifling free speech on campus, huh?), now this... anyway, it's getting bad.
I am usually on the side of PoC in these things, and hell, if it comes to race riots breaking out in my city you best believe I will be going after white folks (maybe with the same weapon, an 8 ball in a sock, that was the weapon of choice during English vs French riots in the 90s), but, I dunno, I cannot stand by this (unless, of course, I am missing something)... and the singer just seems like a weirdo
