This song has been banned from many radio stations in North America in the wake of #MeToo and it being kind of "rapey".
Here's a video with the lyrics:
This is one of my favourite Christmas songs, but yeah, when the lyrics were pointed out... ummmm.... yeah... they are kind of creepy in today's context.
But when the song was written, it was a time when women could not even stay with men they were not married. So, he is really trying to get her to stay, not trying to have sex with her. The "what's in that drink" part, which could be interpreted as a date rape reference, she is really accusing him of being cheap and not giving her alcohol.
And I disagree with banning it from the airwaves, because it will result in a backlash. And it was men who made the decision, not women. But still, women will be accused of it.
And we can listen to stuff that is "problematic" and still like it but not condone the history. For example, Jingle Bells wasn't originally a Christmas song, it was originally performed at minstrel shows to make fun of black people who went to Canada where slavery was illegal, nothing to do with Christmas at all.
Here's a discussion:
I laughed at the part where they asked what song should be banned from the radio, and one person said "Do They Know It's Christmas". I fucking HATE that song and want to perforate my eardrums whenever I hear it.
The song is horrible, but I agree with the points made by the person: it's racist and colonial. But it's not just that, it's objectively horrible (though the racist and colonial part does add to the cringeworthiness of it).
What do you think, and what Christmas songs should be banned from the radio?
Also, what are your favourite Christmas songs?
Here are a couple of my favourites:
