I was thinking this the other day as I picked up some celebrity gossip rags for my mother as she is in the hospital.
Boomer and to a lesser extent, Gen X women, love gossip rags. My mom used to always read them. I'm talking magazines like The National Enquirer, People Weekly, Hello, etc etc. The ones that employ unethical paparazzi to go after celebrities (and I still believe this business model killed Princess Diana back in the day). They usually write inflammatory articles about celebrities, sometimes true, sometimes not, and the stuff that is true should really be none of our business... and I mean, with Britney Spears back in the news these days, I am remembering what the gossip rags did to her back in the day, pretty much leading to her deteriorating mental health which was used to justify that conservatorship she's now stuck in.
And most women know that what is in these celebrity gossip rags is false. My mother and grandmother always told me not to believe what's in them (which makes me wonder why they're so popular considering everyone knows they're publishing BS).
Now you have sites like The Daily Wire, Rebel, Breitbart, Fox News, etc. they publish stuff about public figures that reads very similar to those celebrity gossip rags: very inflammatory and slanderous. They don't give any actual information, just gossip. Their methods of getting information is similarly sleazy. And now you're seeing politicians and public servants resign because of the issues they are having with these sites. Canada will be having an election in August and several politicians have said they are not standing for reelection... most of these are female politicians, I should note, because they are most attacked by these sites. We've also had cases of politicians being followed around by people working for these outlets and public health officials driven to resign over their reporting on COVID mitigation efforts (one media outlet even sent people to spy on one doctor).
And I should note, a lot of gossip rags and right-wing media outlets are owned by the same people.
