To the Sunni Arab minority in Iraq, both Erdogan and the House of Al-Saud have become heroes. They are seen as the safe guards against Shia tyranny. Well Iran's influence has become greatly overt over Iraq, this makes the Sunni Arab minority very uneasy and rightful so. In their minds the Safavid's bloody legacy is still in their minds. The Safavids were a Persian dynasty who adopted Shiaism and tried to enforce it on the various subjects and on of these were the tribes of Western Iraq who had resisted them. In 2003, following the toppling of the former regime of Saddam Huessian, with the Anglo-American invasion, the once branded terrorist group known as Bader brigades which took refuge in Iran, came with vengeance toward the Sunni Arab minority, with massacres and rapes being reported by Human rights organization, and even to the horrors to Western reporters. The once mixed city Baghdad, has become ethnically cleansed by several Shia militas or forced sells from the Sunni minority, thus the city turned into a largely Shia Arab city. At the same time Shia Arabs who had worked for the pervious regime were pardoned and many apolitical Sunni Arabs became victims. In Southern Iraq, the Mandean a non-Muslim community and one of the earliest proto-Christian sects had become extinct as Shia militas, they had to either convert to Shiaism or leave, most left to Jordan, and the Western nations. Sunni Arabs in the South have also been targeted for forced conversions, many left. The Sunni tribes in Southern Iraq have strong relationship with Saudi Arabia. The same can be seen as in the Western regions of Iraq.
Well Shia Arabs were ethnically cleansing the South and Baghdad from non-Shias, the Kurds began expelling Shia Arabs from the North. At the same time Sunni Arabs in the North have strong and favorable view of Turkey, due to being a Sunni nation, and often lament on the Ottoman empire. This can be clearly understood in the historical context of the Ottomans who became the saviours of the Sunni Arab tribes from the Persian Shia Safavids.
Following the civil war of 2006-2009, Iranian products became the most marketable especially in regions which were Shia dominated. Well Turkish and Saudi products began to dominate the Sunni regions.
The AKP party in Turkey, and Erdogan were seen as saviours to the Sunnis world wide, and a revival of Sunnism. Erodgan's covert support to the Sunni Arab tribes in Mosul and in Iraq generally has been greatly welcomed. Not only that Erodgan was seen as man who is faithful and is not under control of the West, rather he pushes against the West, which many Sunni Iraqi Arabs blame for their displacement and marginalization. Erdogan is seen as one of God's faithful and he restored and strengthened the economy of Turkey.
Well the House of Al-Saud are seen more comfortable with the West than Erdogan, there is the commonality of blood that many tribes in Iraq have with Saudi Arabia. Not to mention that the house of Al-Saud has given money, food, and charity to the Western tribes.
How things will unfold only time well tell.
